Life at Winston

Led by New York Partner and Winston Pride Co-Chair David Sakowitz, Winston Pride had a significant presence at the National LGBT Bar Association’s 2019 Lavender Law Annual Conference & Career Fair held August 7-9 in Philadelphia. Our firm is a major sponsor of the LGBT Bar and has participated in this event for more than a dozen years.

After hosting Georgetown law students during their Winter Walk-Around earlier this year, Winston enjoyed several other recent opportunities to network with Georgetown 1Ls.

For several years running, Winston has been the lead sponsor of the University of Michigan Law School’s 1L Oral Advocacy Competition, which provides 1L students with an introduction into moot court and helps them learn about courtroom advocacy and sharpen their public speaking skills.

Associates from our Paris office represented the firm at a job fair held on February 21 at the University Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, which is considered one of France’s best law universities.

A substantial portion of Winston’s practice focuses on litigation, and our appellate and critical motions practice is nationally renowned. We actively seek out former and prospective judicial clerks to join our firm, and the experience and knowledge gained while on clerkships is highly valued by the firm and our clients.

Our attorneys have enjoyed meeting more stellar students from top law schools across the country as we continue 1L recruiting for our 2019 summer class.

Our attorneys have had the opportunity to meet talented and diverse 1L students at several top law schools in the Midwest.

Winston was invited to present on “Launching Your Career – Legal Interviewing” at SMU Dedman School of Law during a Career Foundations & Professional Development program held on January 9. All current 1L students at SMU attended this session as part of the law school’s day-long Professional Summit 2019.

Winston has enjoyed meeting students from top law schools across the country as we kick-off recruiting in the new year. On January 9, we were pleased to welcome nearly 30 1L students from Georgetown Law who visited our Washington, D.C. office as part of the school’s Winter Walk-Around program to learn more about litigation.

Recruitment and development of diverse law students is a centerpiece of Winston’s efforts to enhance diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. As we gear up for the start of 1L recruiting on December 1, our firm was pleased to support and participate in several recent law school events across the country.

The firm reprised its popular “Unwind with Winston” champagne reception on the first day of the 2018 National Association for Law Placement, Inc. (NALP) Conference, held April 24-27 in Hollywood, Florida.

The firm was pleased to sponsor the Women Law Students Association (WLSA) Annual Leadership Banquet held on March 29 as part of Women’s Week 2018 at the University of Michigan Law School.

The University of Michigan Law School’s 2018 1L Oral Advocacy Competition officially began on January 17 with a panel discussion presented by Winston litigation attorneys. 

Firm members enjoyed meeting and sharing their insights with the 50 Berkeley law students who joined us on March 13 for a Winston-provided lunch and panel discussion titled, “Choose Your Own Practice Area Adventure: Litigation v. Transactional.”

Winston was pleased to welcome 200 George Washington University Law School admitted, current, and alumni students for a reception in our Washington, D.C. office on February 7. Firm members in attendance had the chance to speak with prospective students about their experiences at GW Law as well as life post-grad as a Winston attorney. 

On January 11, Winston’s Washington, D.C. office welcomed 32 Georgetown University law students, who visited our firm as part of Georgetown’s 1L Walk Around Program. 

Winston was invited to present a panel on “Launching Your Career – Legal Interviewing” at SMU Dedman School of Law during a Career Foundations & Professional Development program held on January 10. 

As we gear up for law student recruiting in the new year, Winston took the opportunity to meet members of the University of Illinois College of Law Class of 2020 and the Washington University School of Law Class of 2020.

On October 11, Real Estate Partner Doug Yeager spoke at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. He spoke to 70 third-year students, each of whom is externing with a different corporate legal department through SMU’s Corporate Counsel Externship Program. Doug’s presentation on commercial lease agreements was part of the classroom component of the program and designed to broaden the student’s substantive real estate knowledge.

For the second consecutive year, Winston & Strawn’s Chicago office hosted approximately 80 University of Illinois College of Law 1L and LL.M. students for the law school’s inaugural Professional Experience Day.
