Winston partners Michael Elkin and Jennifer Golinveaux led an in-depth session on the landscape of AI in media at the National Journalism + AI Accelerator, held January 6–8, 2026, at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Hosted by, by the Knight Center for the Future of News and NEWSWELL, the three-day invitation-only program convened more than 100 journalists, technologists, and AI/media leaders from across the country to examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping the creation and distribution of news.
In their session, Michael and Jennifer explored the evolving legal challenges facing modern newsrooms, including:
- The legal uses and limitations of AI in journalism
- How news organizations can navigate copyright, fair use, and liability risks
- Strategies to prevent unauthorized use of copyrighted content in AI models
- Potential civil claims stemming from the misuse of protected works in AI systems
Their discussion offered attendees a clear, actionable framework for understanding—and staying ahead of—the legal implications of integrating AI into newsroom workflows.
