William has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and concentrates his practice on intellectual property matters, including patent and trade secret litigation. William assists his clients by combining his background as an engineer and software developer with his experience as a civil litigator appearing before a range of courts and administrative agencies.

William has experience representing clients in a broad array of intellectual property litigation matters, including patent and trade secrets litigation before state and district courts, along with inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He is a member of the firm's Videogame, Gaming & Esports Group, dedicated to providing comprehensive legal solutions to companies in these industries.

Before attending law school, William built web-based applications, with a particular emphasis on applications using PHP, AJAX, and MySQL. William is also proficient in C++, Java, and Python; and he has a working knowledge of FORTRAN and COBOL.

Recent Experience

Winston Secures Favorable Settlement for Virtualization Company in 10-Patent Case

William was recognized within the top 50 in Patexia’s 2025 Patent Litigation Report.  He was also recognized in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America in the areas of Commercial Litigation (2023–2024), Intellectual Property Law (2024), and Litigation - Intellectual Property (2023–2025).  

The University of Alabama School of Law’s clinical program faculty recognized William with the annual Outstanding Clinic Student Award for his pro bono representation of clients as a law student intern in the Civil Law Clinic (2016–2017). William was part of a team that the judges from the 2017 Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition’s Southeastern Regional recognized for giving the best oral argument as part of a mock trademark infringement appeal. As a second-year law student, William aggregated the highest individual score during the University of Alabama School of Law’s internal moot court competition and was named the Best Oral Advocate Overall.

Education

William received his B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Alabama in 2014. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2017 where he was senior editor of the Alabama Law Review, was elected to the Order of the Coif, and spent three semesters representing clients in state and federal litigation as a law student intern in the Civil Law Clinic.
