2013 Summer Associate Highlights: Chicago Style
Blog
October 15, 2013
Another great summer has finished up which got me thinking of the refreshes we made to the summer program in Chicago. In prior years, our Legal Writing Workshop was simply a lecture. This year, we added an activity component. Summer Committee members Scott Ahmad and Quinn Shean researched and provided instructions to the summers prior to partner Linda Coberly’s lecture. After the lecture, the summers finalized brief memos, which were reviewed by some of the best writers at the firm. The summers appreciated the attorney feedback and it was helpful knowing the memos were not evaluated.
In addition, we got a new fact pattern for the mock trial. No more allegations of arson at a dry cleaner in Nita City! Our new problem revolved around liability for Vertex Manufacturing on a personal injury of a shipyard worker. Having a new fact pattern meant attorneys had to learn a new story and some of them really got into it. Prelaw students from University of Chicago and Northwestern served as our jurors. This year’s jury was torn and ultimately decided in favor of the defendant. To celebrate the conclusion of the trial, we hosted a happy hour at Hub 51 where we awarded summers and attorneys with awards for “Best Closing Argument,” “Most Believable Witness,” “Best Cross Examination,” etc.
Other summer events that stick out in my mind are the first ever Trivia/Bowling Night at Southport Lanes and the annual Cubs rooftop game at Wrigley. The Cubs game is always a success and we want to make sure our out-of-towners know how to eat a hot dog, Chicago style.
