A Winston & Strawn pro bono team led by Aldo Badini and Michelle Tuma was featured in the Litigator of the Week column by The Am Law Litigation Daily on November 14, 2025.

The Winston team, with co-counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF, was recognized for securing a $112 million verdict on behalf of a class of over 670 individuals who were unlawfully detained by the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office and later transferred to the custody of federal immigration authorities. Earlier this year, U.S. District Senior Judge William Kuntz II in Brooklyn granted summary judgment to the plaintiffs on their claims that Suffolk County officials violated New York law and the Fourth Amendment when they extended the detention of immigrants in custody solely based on detainer requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. After a week-long trial, federal jurors last week awarded class members $75 million damages for violations of their Fourth Amendment and New York constitutional rights and $37 million for violations of due process.

The team also included Jara Jacobson, Jennifer Kopp, Hector Correa Gaviria, Becca Ou, Sophie Borne, Sydney Hartman, Calvin Kim, Andrew King, Rachel Rubin, Michelle Slezinger, Dylan Russian, Corinne Kyritsopoulos, Meg MacLean, Frank Restagno, Allison Skopec, Arthur Schoen, Josh Roth, and Hugh Dunkley.

Learn more about the journey behind this momentous win for immigrant rights.
