Winston & Strawn was a proud sponsor of the American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA)’s annual International Law Weekend (ILW). Taking place October 20-22, the three-day conference featured presentations on a wide range of international law issues and developments of current importance. The theme of ILW 2022 was “The Next 100 Years of International Law.”

Partner Michael Stepek and Associate Imad Khan, who serves as co-chair of the event’s Organizing Committee, participated in a practicum titled “Human Rights Claims and Counterclaims in International Energy Arbitrations.” Additionally, Associate Suzanne Labi spoke on a panel titled “Pathways to Employment in International Law.”

Key Takeaways

Pathways to Employment in International Law

  • Keep an open mind about the subject of law you will specialize in.
  • Seek out a deeper understanding of the firm/institution you are applying to by reading judgments of cases they have worked on.
  • Network at conferences and for conferences where student attendance is not free, contact the conference organisers and see if they need help behind the scenes.
  • Stay as flexible as possible on jurisdiction/geography early in your career.
