Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), eligible individuals, or ‘Dreamers,’ looking to remain in the U.S. must renew their status with the U.S. government every two years. However, even during the COVID-19 pandemic no electronic filing is allowed to complete this process. Maria Kutnick, Winston & Strawn pro bono counsel in Chicago, is running remote DACA clinics for the firm’s attorneys in San Francisco and Texas, as well as in Chicago, hoping to help process as many DACA status renewals as possible.
Maria shares “There are so many hoops to jump through.” Despite the logistical and technical challenges, Maria is undeterred and is determined to help Dreamers register with the U.S. government.

Maria shares “It is it is important for us, to help them the way they help us and our society.”
