John Rosenthal Discusses Legal Automation Technologies with CNNMoney
March 28, 2014
Winston & Strawn partner John Rosenthal was quoted in the CNNMoney article, “Here Come the Robot Lawyers,” published March 28, 2014.
The article describes how new automation technologies are minimizing the amount of time and manpower necessary to complete general legal tasks. While the article does not suggest the legal profession is on the path to complete automation, it does discuss how certain firms are leveraging automation technology, including Winston & Strawn.
Winston & Strawn uses legal review technology known as predictive coding, in which lawyers input relevant information into a computer program that can analyze entire data sets. In a recent study, the firm found that the software took roughly one-fifth the amount of time compared to human reviewers and was more effective in surfacing relevant documents.
Mr. Rosenthal pointed out that, despite the obvious benefits, automated technology is still largely unadopted by the legal system.
"I don't think that the significance of this has caught on yet," he said. "Probably less than 5% of the complex cases in the civil system are using these technologies."
Mr. Rosenthal is a litigation partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He represents clients across the globe in an array of complex antitrust and litigation matters. His practice also involves counseling clients on a variety of trade regulation, trademark, and commercial issues.
