Winston & Strawn Partner Bobby Malhotra recently spoke with Legaltech News about the Goldman Sachs report predicting that generative artificial intelligence could substantially impact the economy and workforce, where they estimated that AI could automate 44% of legal tasks in the U.S.

Bobby said he agrees with the findings that several legal tasks and in turn, those jobs, would be replaced by AI. However, “only to a certain extent,” he said. But “jobs that require human input, empathy, innovation, creative thinking, judgment, social experiences, and interaction will not be replaced.”

Bobby noted that AI doesn’t get physically tired, or make mistakes because of physical or environmental factors, and that gives it a leg up on repetitive, rote legal tasks. As organizations begin to get more comfortable with technology in general, it is likely to replace some administrative jobs, he added. “We have to put things in perspective and understand that AI will complement and supplement, and not replace, the majority of jobs,” he said. “The truth is that humans and machines work well together, and they each have their own set of strengths and weaknesses.”

At the end of the day however, “calculators did not replace mathematicians,” and generative AI won’t replace the humans whose thought is vital to a certain task. In fact, calculators simply “made [mathematicians] better at their jobs.”
