Summer Program Mock Trials Combine Skills-Building and Networking

July 16, 2018
Members of Winston’s Chicago summer associate class gained hands-on experience while getting to know each other and our attorneys during three mock trials and a celebratory reception held on July 11 and 12.
The mock trials involved a personal injury case brought by a fictitious shipyard worker who fell 70 feet from an extended-reach personnel lift he was using on the job. The suit, which included highly technical evidence, alleged that the manufacturer of the lift failed to design a product that is reasonably safe.
Based on the significant time our volunteer jurors spent in deliberations, it was evident that the summers did a terrific job presenting compelling arguments for both sides. The following summer associates received special awards (center photo):
- Best Closing Statement: Michael Lill
- Dan Webb Award: Jack Leon
- Best Direct Examination: Jordan Bucci
- Best Opening Statement: Andrea Herman
- Best Cross Examination: Linda Greene
Of Counsel Julie Bauer and Partner Steve Grimes had fun taking on the role of the judges, and the following volunteer witnesses received props for their notable performances:
- Most Believable Witness: Associate Mike Toomey
- Most Dramatic Witness: Associate Zack Sorman
All participants and volunteers were recognized at a post-trial happy hour in the Winston Café.
