Los Angeles – Verbum Dei High School
Winston & Strawn’s Los Angeles office currently sponsors two students from Verbum Dei High School in its Work Study Program. Verbum Dei, an all-male high school in the heart of Watts in Southern California, is part of the Cristo Rey Network of Catholic college preparatory high schools for underrepresented urban youth. The Work Study Program requires all students to work five days per month performing entry-level clerical work. The money earned by the students goes directly to the school to help fund their education at Verbum Dei, accounting for almost 70% of annual tuition. The program is committed to serving students and families who otherwise could not afford the opportunity of a private, parochial college preparatory education.
San Francisco – Bar Association of San Francisco’s Law Academy
As part of the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Law Academy, volunteers from the San Francisco office, including docket & records manager Maureen Conway, participated in a mentoring program with diverse students at Balboa High School in San Francisco. The mentoring program, held in Spring 2013, was designed to prepare students for the “world of work” and included small-group meetings with students interested in learning more about the legal profession. Mentors worked with students once a week for seven weeks on interviewing skills, resume and cover letter writing skills, and related job skills.
