Press Release
Thompson and Carter Appointed Special Assistant Attorneys General by Office of the Illinois Attorney General
April 28, 2011
CHICAGO – Winston & Strawn's senior chairman Gov. James R. Thompson and associate Matthew R. Carter have been appointed Special Assistant Attorneys General by the Office of the Illinois Attorney General to represent the Department of State Police of the State of Illinois in litigation pending in Peoria County regarding the interpretation of Illinois' Freedom of Information Act and Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. See Illinois State Rifle Association, et al. v. Illinois State Police, et al., Peoria County Circuit Court Case, No. 11 CH 151.
The Department of State Police does not believe that the information it maintains regarding Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) cards is legally subject to requests under Illinois' Freedom of Information Act. Winston & Strawn LLP is confident that a full and fair adjudication of this issue by Illinois' courts will vindicate that position and is looking forward to representing the Department in this important matter. For additional comment about this matter, please contact Gov. James R. Thompson directly.
