Winston Wins National Law Journal’s Chicago Intellectual Property Department of the Year
February 29, 2016
The National Law Journal has named Winston & Strawn the 2016 Chicago Intellectual Property Department of the Year. Following the firm’s Chicago Litigation Department of the Year honor last year, the publication has once again recognized Winston’s oldest and largest office, home to more than 70 of the firm’s 190-lawyer Intellectual Property Department.
Highlights from the department’s big year include a win on behalf of artificial turf maker FieldTurf USA Inc. in a patent infringement lawsuit that resulted in a $30 million jury verdict, the largest patent infringement verdict ever in the Eastern District of Michigan (read more about the case here), as well as several telecommunications and pharmaceutical victories.
The firm won two rulings against Sprint Communications Co. for cable company clients in 2015. Healso mentioned that the department’s pharmaceutical cases have been “at the heart of the practice” for many years.
“All three cases (in telecommunications and for FieldTurf in 2015) really turned on getting a judge or a jury to step into the shoes of our client and understand why they cared about the positions they were taking in the lawsuit, and getting them to share that passion. To be honest, that’s most of the key to advocacy,” A former partner said.
