Can FIFA legally stop football players from competing in the World Cup if the planned European Super League goes ahead?
Winston & Strawn Partner Peter Crowther shared his thoughts with GlobalData Sport on the controversial issue, stating that FIFA is engaging in anti-competitive behaviour and is “abusing a dominant position by moving to effectively shut down a competitor.”
Peter added that FIFA’s threat to stop players from competing in the World Cup is not a proportionate response, as the proposed restrictions have nothing to do with the competitive threat, and that if it was a normal marketplace, FIFA would have to offer some type of commercial incentive for clubs and players to stay with it.
