National Law Journal Names Jeffrey Kessler a 2019 Litigation Trailblazer
September 12, 2019
Winston & Strawn’s Co-Executive Chairman Jeffrey Kessler has been named a Litigation Trailblazer by The National Law Journal. Now in its sixth year, the annual list recognizes leading professionals who are making a difference in litigation.
The publication highlights Jeffrey’s career and his trailblazing work leading a Winston team in a landmark antitrust suit filed by Division I college basketball and football players against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and many of its conferences. The case went to trial in September 2018, and a few months later, the court ordered a permanent injunction against the NCAA’s compensation restrictions. Jeffrey has also been leading a Winston team on behalf of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in their class action for equal pay. “Both are precedent-setting and involve helping athletes protect their rights and economic interests,” he said.
As for the future legal landscape surrounding sports and antitrust law, “We are fighting for the North American Soccer League verses USSF because they are blocking competition to Major League Soccer. We are fighting for the rights of NFL players, including those who took a knee in protest. We are also just starting a new proceeding for a double-amputee runner who is being denied his right to compete against non-disabled athletes. There is always a new horizon.”
