Jeff is a complex-commercial litigator who concentrates his practice on business disputes, including breach of contract, fraud, and securities matters. He has significant experience in all aspects of litigation in federal and state courts throughout the country, including trying numerous cases to verdict.   

 

Jeff concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation, financial services matters, and securities litigation. He represents and advises numerous public and private companies including Fortune 500 companies, private equity firms, real estate trusts, and startups.    

Jeff has significant experience in all aspects of litigation in federal and state courts throughout the country, as well as in commercial arbitration and mediation. He has vast deposition experience and has tried numerous cases to verdict as both plaintiff and defense counsel, including obtaining a fraud verdict where his client was awarded attorneys’ fees and punitive damages. He also routinely advises companies on strategies to avoid litigation and related best practices.    

Prior to joining the firm, he served as a law clerk at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, completed a fellowship at the Chicago Legal Clinic, and worked as judicial extern for the Honorable Robert E. Gordon of the Illinois Appellate Court.

Jeff’s notable past engagements include:

  • Secured a fraud verdict against an investor where his client received full compensatory damages, punitive damages, and attorneys’ fees
  • Led an arbitration concerning a technology dispute and securing full compensatory damages and interest for his client
  • Participated in various successful preliminary injunction hearings for real estate, sports, and employment related matters
  • Participated in a post-closing M&A trial and securing a favorable judgment shortly after his client’s case was filed
  • Participated in a post-closing M&A arbitration leading to a favorable resolution for his client
  • Represented an industry trade association and the U.S. manufacturers of high fructose corn syrup through discovery and trial in a high-profile false advertising case brought by sugar industry companies and trade associations
  • Successfully won and defended various motions to dismiss and summary judgment filings on behalf of clients in complex commercial matters, financial services litigation, securities litigation, and M&A disputes
  • Conducted various internal investigations on behalf of major organizations
  • Represented underwriters in securities matters
  • Advised emerging technology companies in formation, employment, and litigation matters
  • Prepared submissions for U.S. Congressional proceedings and advised clients on related testimony

Jeff also maintains an active pro bono practice, including first-chairing a jury trial, securing a favorable judgment under the Illinois Hate Crime Act, and advising a charitable investment fund assisting underrepresented business founders.    

Jeff was named to Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in America, for Commercial Litigation in 2021–2023. He was also recognized in the 2023 edition of Lawdragon’s “500 X – The Next Generation.”

Jeff is a member of the firm’s Chicago Recruiting Committee and is committed to recruiting and mentoring attorneys. Previously, he was a member of the firm’s Summer Associate Committee. He also serves on the Judicial Evaluation Committee of the Chicago Bar Association, which conducts evaluations of candidates for judicial offices and sitting judges seeking retention within Cook County, Illinois. In addition, Jeff is a member of the Leadership Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, a mentorship organization focused on nurturing children to reach their potential and strengthening Chicago’s communities.
