Starling focuses his practice on government investigations and defense, internal investigations, and complex commercial litigation.

Starling represents clients in the financial services, consumer products, and retail industries facing high‑stakes regulatory, criminal, and civil investigations, as well as complex litigation. He has handled matters adverse to the Department of Justice, Federal Reserve, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Securities and Exchange Commission, and multiple state attorneys general.

Starling is strongly committed to pro bono work. He has represented clients both locally in Charlotte and across the country in expunction, domestic violence, landlord-tenant disputes, and 42 U.S.C. § 1983 matters.

Before joining Winston, Starling served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Robert J. Conrad, Jr., U.S. District Court, Western District of North Carolina, and worked at a management consulting firm, where he advised corporate legal and compliance departments across North America.

Starling serves on Winston’s Associate Committee and Summer Program. He is also a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association and the Urban League of Central Carolinas.

Education

Starling earned his J.D., with honors, from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 2022, where he was a member of the North Carolina Journal of Law and Technology. He received his B.A., cum laude, in Politics & International Affairs from Wake Forest University in 2015.
