Winston & Strawn sponsored California Minority Counsel Program's (CMCP) 21st Annual Business Conference: The Beauty of Diversity held on September 30 – October 1 in San Francisco.

A litigation associate participated in the panel titled "Digital Dilemmas: The Price and Perils of E-Discovery." This panel addressed the following issues:

  • How California's new e-Discovery rules differ from its federal counterpart
  • Attorneys' ethical obligations in pursuing and responding to e-Discovery
  • Protecting attorney-client privileged communications with vendors and in electronic production
  • Proactive measures that companies and their outside counsel can take to control run-away e-Discovery costs
  • Recent court guidance highlighting the duties of counsel in complying with e-Discovery obligations, and sanctions for violations and abuse

Other topics discussed at the conference included:

  • The Diversity Edge: Making Law Firm Diversity a Reality
  • Beauty in Balance: Taking Steps Toward Work-Life Harmony
  • Beauty and the Bench: The Judicial Perspective: Plenary Session on Diversifying the Judiciary
  • Painting Your Portrait: Professional Development Stations
  • There's Beauty in Action: From the Desk of the GC Plenary Session

Since 1989, the CMCP has worked to promote diversity among the state's attorney population and advance a more inclusive and just legal profession.

San Francisco partners Charles Birenbaum and Amanda Groves attended the event on behalf of Winston & Strawn.
