Winston & Strawn Featured in The American Lawyer's Annual Lateral Report
February 8, 2013
Winston & Strawn's growth was referenced in the February 2013 issue of The American Lawyer's annual Lateral Report, "Escape Routes." Among the Am Law 200, 2012 marked the highest number of later partner moves since 2009.
Twenty-three partners joined Winston & Strawn from Dewey & LeBoeuf, marking the largest number of Dewey partners moving to a single firm. A total of 70 Dewey attorneys joined the firm in May.
In response to the Dewey lateral moves, firm chairman Dan Webb told The American Lawyer: "I've wanted to beef up our New York litigation presence for a long time. We'd spoken to a lot of [potential] laterals and had spent a lot of time talking with firms going out of business like Heller and Howery to try and pick up their partners. I was amazed that we got the deal done within seven to 10 days."
Michael Elkin, managing partner of the firm's New York office, explained that the Dewey lawyers addressed specific needs for talent, mainly in the firm's securities, antitrust, and white collar practices.
Jeffrey Kessler, referred to as a "sports law heavyweight," was also recognized as one of the most high-profile lateral moves of 2012 and included as an "All-Star Lateral."
