Winston & Strawn Announces Retirement of Legendary Trial Lawyer Edward L. Foote

CHICAGO (December 18, 2015) — Winston & Strawn LLP announced today that Edward L. Foote has retired from the firm after 60 years of practice.

Mr. Foote joined Winston in 1955 (known then as Winston, Strawn, Black and Towner) as its 35th lawyer and its only hire that year. A graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School, he led the firm through the 1970s and 80s alongside former Managing Partner Tom Reynolds, Jr., first-chairing jury trials in more than 20 federal district courts and arguing three cases before the United States Supreme Court.

“Ed is leaving behind an incredible legacy at Winston,” said Tom Fitzgerald, firmwide managing partner. “He is part of Winston’s DNA. We owe him a great deal of gratitude for his firm leadership and mentorship of numerous Winston trial lawyers.”

Mr. Foote pioneered Winston’s involvement in patent infringement and white collar defense work. As head of the firm’s litigation department for nearly 20 years, he built a robust practice in antitrust, securities, and other complex commercial litigation.

Mr. Foote is a member of The American College of Trial Lawyers, The International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He has been a faculty member in the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, the Advanced Institute for Trial Advocacy, and the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education. In 2016, Mr. Foote will teach a course at Loyola School of Law on trial advocacy, cross-examination, and closing arguments.
