August 26-28, 2013

Winston & Strawn sponsored and associate Jason Campbell spoke at the California HR Conference, presented by Professionals in Human Resources Association, held August 26-28, 2013 in Anaheim, California.

Mr. Campbell and Ms. Ngo-Bonnici presented, “Alleviating Acronym Anxiety for CA Employers: Navigating New Changes to FMLA, CFRA, PDL, and PFL.” New federal and state cases and regulations continue to further complicate the already complex leave of absence arena. In this interactive presentation, Mr. Campbell and Ms. Ngo-Bonnici focused on the increasing divergence between the FMLA and the CFRA, new Fair Employment and Housing Commission’s pregnancy disability leave regulations, and changes at the Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

They also discussed employer best practices for managing an employee’s leave of absence, including intermittent leave, the differences and interactions between types of leave (FMLA, CFRA, pregnancy, etc.) and salary continuation (California Paid Family Leave and State Disability Insurance, employer provided Short-Term Disability, etc.), and when an employer can allow or require use of accrued vacation, sick, and paid time off during a FMLA and/or CFRA leave.
