Washington, D.C. associate Maria Kostytska was a panelist at the 74th Conference of the International Law Association (ILA) hosted by the Netherlands Society of International Law on Tuesday, August 17 in the Hague.
Ms. Kostytska presented on the topic of "Invoking Human Rights Standards and Precedents in Investment Arbitration" as part of the session "Integrating Human Rights in Civil Cases." The session was divided into two panels – the plaintiffs' and the defendants' – and featured experts from across the globe who addressed the interplay between human rights and civil law.
Joining Ms. Kostytska on the companies as plaintiffs' panel were Piers Gardner, barrister with Monkton Chambers and Timothy Nelson with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom. The companies as defendants' panel featured Liesbeth Unger, manager of Human Rights & Business at Aim for Human Rights and Beth Stephens, Professor at Rutgers School of Law. Daan Lunsingh Scheurleer from NautaDutilh N.V. moderated the discussion.
