Virtual Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Wrigley Field
March 25, 2021
In anticipation of the Cubs’ season starting this week (and the stadium allowing 25% capacity), Winston & Strawn held an exclusive, behind-the-scenes, virtual tour of Wrigley Field for Chicago-based Winston attorneys and clients. Following the event, the Chicago Cubs Tour Experiences Manager Evan Hill answered questions during a live Q&A.
Here are a few fun facts Evan highlighted during the event:
- Wrigley Field is the second oldest baseball field in the country second only to Fenway Park.
- The park’s scoreboard was constructed in 1937 and is hand operated to this day. It has been declared a landmark and legally can no longer be changed or updated.
- It only took six weeks to build the original ballpark.
- The tradition of flying a “W” flag after wins and an “L” flag after losses was initiated to spark the interest of commuters riding the elevated train home past the field after work.
- The Chicago Bears played 50 games at Wrigley Field.
- The first night game at Wrigley was played in 1988.
- Charles H. Weeghman, the park’s namesake when it was first built in 1914, introduced now ubiquitous parts of the game including concession stands, fans keeping out-of-bounds balls, and Ladies’ Day at the ballpark.
