Understanding & Preventing Labor Trafficking in Corporate Supply Chains
July 20, 2016
Winston & Strawn hosted a seminar titled “Understanding and Preventing Labor Trafficking in Corporate Supply Chains” on July 20, 2016.
According the United Nations, 36 million men, women, and children are in situations of modern day slavery across the globe. Nearly 75 percent are victims of forced labor. Most of those are working in manufacturing supply chains for little or no pay. Regulators are stepping up efforts to curb slavery across supply chains. For example, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act and the new UK Modern Slavery Act affect many companies with operations in California and the UK, regardless of their country of origin. As the spotlight intensifies on modern day slavery, companies are seeking to better understand the relevance of this topic to their own business.
This client briefing was led by Matthew Friedman, the Executive Director of The Mekong Club, an Asia-based NGO that advises businesses around the world to help them understand and address the issue of forced labor and human trafficking. The Mekong Club emphasizes a positive, supportive ‘business-to-business’ approach to fight slavery. This presentation offered a:
- global overview of trafficking
- summary of present trends across Asia and the world
- description of new and emerging legislation
- summary of what companies can do to reduce their risk
- a legal analysis of U.S. anti-trafficking compliance laws
