Nuclear Decommissioning: What You Need to Know Now
February 12, 2014
Winston & Strawn hosted an eLunch titled “Nuclear Decommissioning: What You Need to Know Now” on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 11:15 – 12:30 p.m. (Central).
A number of nuclear plants in the U.S. have recently closed or announced plans to close. While the reasons vary from plant-to-plant, including competition from cheap natural gas, costly new regulations, and regulatory uncertainty, they have one thing in common: all of them must eventually undergo decommissioning. The decommissioning process involves a host of new economic, regulatory, and political challenges for plant owners, but also presents opportunities to expand decommissioning-focused businesses.
Winston & Strawn’s nuclear practice group partner Bill Horin discussed the status of recent plant closure announcements, an overview of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s decommissioning process, and recent developments surrounding power reactor decommissioning and decommissioning funding.
