McConnell Discusses Winston’s Pro Bono Activity
October 26, 2010
Winston & Strawn pro bono counsel Greg McConnell was quoted in the October 26 Chicago Daily Law Bulletin article titled "Corporate Attorneys Find Avenues for Pro Bono Work."
The article discussed organizations, such as The Law Project, that coordinate with many of Chicago's large law firms to help connect corporate lawyers to projects involving nonprofits and small businesses. The lawyers provide pro bono counsel in a variety of transactional matters, such as corporate restructuring and leases and contract review. McConnell noted that Winston encourages its lawyers to commit to at least 35 hours of pro bono service with these local providers.
According to the Law Bulletin, Winston attorneys have found several opportunities through The Law Project for the firm's corporate lawyers, including the Chicago Community Loan Fund - an organization that provides low-cost financing to community developers for affordable housing - and the Law Project's first-time home-buyers program, in which lawyers represent individuals who have housing choice vouchers in real estate closings.
"It's a real obvious way that a transactional lawyer, like a real estate lawyer, can have a significant impact," McConnell said. "That is their housing. What can be more important than that?"
