Winston & Strawn Litigation Partner Matthew Carter has been named to Chicago Daily Law Bulletin’s 2017 “Forty Under 40” list.

The publication includes praise for Matthew from former Illinois Governor and Winston & Strawn Chairman, Jim Thompson, as well as Illinois Supreme Court Justices Rita Garman and Thomas Kilbride, and notes that Matthew stands out amongst some of the most talented legal minds in the city.

Matthew’s impressive legal victories include serving as a key member of the team that successfully defended Philip Morris in an appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court from an Illinois appellate court opinion that reinstated a $10.1 billion consumer fraud judgment against the tobacco manufacturer. The Supreme Court vacated the $10.1 billion judgment.

In addition to other courtroom victories, Matthew is a volunteer with the Illinois Judges Foundation, serving on the Foundation’s Auxiliary Committee to help raise funds supporting the foundation’s work.

In working with Matthew as a volunteer, Justice Kilbride says: “Matt is kind, thoughtful and mature beyond his years…the compassion and temperament necessary to become a truly exceptional attorney.”
