Winston & Strawn Partner Linda T. Coberly sat down with Law Quadrangle, a magazine published by Linda’s alma mater, the University of Michigan Law School, to discuss her work on NCAA v. Alston—the landmark Supreme Court case in which student-athletes prevailed over the NCAA by arguing that the organization’s compensation practices violated antitrust laws.

Linda served as counsel of record on the case. She was involved in briefing the Ninth Circuit, opposing certiorari at the Supreme Court, and then in preparing and briefing the case for arguments.

“The ruling is really important for the many athletes who sacrificed so much for their teams, including their health and their bodies,” Linda said. “The majority of those students never go pro, and they are people for whom some additional internships, tutoring, and other benefits related to education will make a real difference in their lives—and in their ability to support themselves when they leave school.”

When asked about her time at Winston, Linda described her intention of broadening the Firm’s appellate practice back when she joined in 2004. “I have found that the same clients who are sophisticated about wanting a trial lawyer at the top of their cases are also sophisticated about wanting appellate lawyers involved,” she said. “It’s been a really great fit for me.”
