Law360 Names Winston & Strawn a 2023 Illinois Powerhouse

Winston & Strawn was named as one of Law360’s 2023 Regional Powerhouses in the Illinois Powerhouses category. The annual Regional Powerhouses series recognizes firms “handling some of the biggest deals and most high-profile courtroom battles across nine states, offering clients regional expertise, and making a lasting impact on the law at the state and local levels.”
Winston’s Co-Executive Chairman Dan Webb attributed Winston’s ongoing success in part to the firm’s deep bench of attorneys during an interview with Law360. “I think it’s an objective fact that as far as Illinois law firms go, Winston & Strawn has more first chair jury trial lawyers than any other Illinois firm,” he said. “As far as actual cases that go to trial in front of a jury, we try more than any Illinois firm that I know of, and it’s been that way for a number of years.”
Appellate & Critical Motions Practice Chair Linda Coberly also addressed the firm’s strategically varied practice areas. “We’re a very trial-intensive firm, but the diversity of practice is a stability thing,” she said. “It’s been a concentrated effort to get to 50-50 transactions and litigation. Without deemphasizing litigation at all, we’ve just built up in these other capacities.”
One notable victory discussed in the Law360 write-up was Winston’s representation of real estate investment company Stockbridge Capital Group. “The court found that we pierced the corporate veil and that the national parent company was responsible,” Partner Bill O'Neil said. “It was a big win because it’s so unique. Piercing the corporate veil is really hard to do. There’s very few cases in the history of Illinois jurisprudence where that's been done. It takes an egregious fact pattern, and it definitely sent some ripples through the industry.”
