Winston & Strawn labor and employment partner Laura Petroff, based in the firm's Los Angeles office, spoke at the Forum for Florida General Counsel on April 5, 2013 in Palm Beach, Florida.

Ms. Petroff presented "Hot Topics in the Employment Arena: From Managing Class Actions to Social Media Implications, Employers Face New Challenges."

With the Obama Administration firmly in place for a second term, employers can expect an increased emphasis on compliance and regulatory issues over the next four years. While some agencies, like the EEOC, have been focused on stronger enforcement for several years, others are expected to up the ante. An increased number of violations and settlements often result in additional funds for an agency which is subjected to a tight budget. Ms. Petroff explained what businesses need to be prepared for in the changing landscape of employment law and shared which strategies and tactics can help your company stay a few steps ahead. Topics covered included:

  • Strategies for Preventing Class Actions, Managing Multiple Class Actions, and Deflecting the "Interest Groups"
  • Balancing your Obligations and your Employees' Rights under the EEOC's new direction
  • Developing a Proactive Plan for Reducing Your Future Risks – Prevent and Preempt Employee Litigation
  • Controlling Possible Exposure Created by Social Media, Before, During, and After Employment
