Ken Berry Named Legal Aid Chicago Volunteer of the Year
February 28, 2020
Winston & Strawn Senior Paralegal Ken Berry was honored by Legal Aid Chicago (LAC) as its 2019 Volunteer of the Year during a reception on February 25. This award recognized Berry’s outstanding contributions as a pro bono volunteer at the North Lawndale Legal Clinic.
LAC started this monthly civil legal aid intake clinic in January 2019 in partnership with Winston and UCAN, a prominent social service agency in North Lawndale. On the third Tuesday of each month, Winston volunteers come together with LAC staff members at UCAN’s campus with the goals of empowering walk-in clients for self-advocacy and offering concrete steps to move forward with their case.
Berry has been present at almost every clinic, which served 204 clients during 2019 in the areas of family law, child welfare, housing, public benefits, and other areas. He has also gone above and beyond in his commitment to LAC clients, helping with demand letters, expungement, and sealing referrals outside of the clinics.
Partner Kimball Anderson, who provided pro bono representation to Berry in successfully overturning a 1992 wrongful conviction, also attended the LAC awards reception.
According to LAC, Berry’s “indisputable dedication to creating equal justice for all is an inspiration to us all.”
