Joan Fife Discusses the Career of Judge Robert L. Tamietti

Labor and employment partner Joan Fife, who serves as managing partner of Winston & Strawn's San Francisco office, was quoted in the Daily Journal profile of Robert L. Tamietti, who sat on the Nevada City bench for seven years before returning to Truckee, Calif.

In the profile, Judge Tamietti discusses one of his toughest cases; one in which Ms. Fife represented the defendants. The case concerned employees of a slot machine manufacturing company in Nevada who were later hired by another company in California. It involved different state laws on non-compete provisions, and determining which laws should apply.

"He asked questions that went beyond what either side had cited. I thought he was very bright," Ms. Fife stated. "I think he really enjoyed reading the cases and I think he really enjoyed thinking about the legal issues."

After her experience, Ms. Fife thought perhaps attorneys should strategically file in Truckee to get as much time and attention from a judge as her case did.

"You need to give your briefing the care and attention you would give a 9th Circuit judge," Ms. Fife told the Daily Journal. "Don't be deceived by the fact that he's sitting in Truckee."
