Jeffrey Kessler Named to Sports Business Journal’s 2021 List of The Most Influential People in Sports Business
December 13, 2021
Winston & Strawn Co-Executive Chairman & Co-Chair, Antitrust/Competition & Sports Law Practices Jeffrey Kessler has been named to Sports Business Journal’s 2021 list of The Most Influential People in Sports Business.
This recognition stems from Jeffrey’s decades of work on behalf of athletes, player classes, and unions, and in particular his recent victory when he argued the NCAA v. Alston case on behalf of college athletes before the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 9-0 decision in June, the high court struck down the legal defense the NCAA has used for decades to justify why its rules don’t violate federal antitrust law. The case has already had a dramatic impact on what colleges and universities can offer in education-related benefits to the athletes, and in eliminating NCAA imposed restrictions on the marketing rights around an athlete’s name, Image, and likeness. It also calls into question numerous other NCAA rules which restrict the compensation and benefits that athletes can receive from their conferences and schools
