Increasing Well-Being: Minimizing Self-Sabotage and Maximizing Self-Empowerment
October 2, 2018
Winston & Strawn Director of Coaching Diane Costigan contributed a chapter in the American Bar Association’s (ABA) The Best Lawyer You Can Be: A Guide to Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellness by Stewart Levine. The book features step-by-step behavioral guidance of what lawyers need to do in order to maintain emotional intelligence, resilience, and mindfulness.
The chapter is titled “Increasing Well-Being: Minimizing Self-Sabotage and Maximizing Self-Empowerment.” Following is an excerpt from the chapter:
At some point almost all of us self-sabotage. We get in the way of our own self-proclaimed goals. We say we want these goals but don’t take steps that would move the needle in the right direction. Other times, we act in ways that propel us in the exact opposite direction of where we want to be. Getting in the way of our own goals can compromise our well-being as many of the goals we set are meant to be in furtherance of our well-being, whether it is to exercise, meditate, or sleep more; improve our overall health through diet and lifestyle changes; or find more balance. When we resist these goals, we are keeping ourselves from living healthier, happier, more fulfilling lives. But there is hope. This chapter explores what self-sabotage is, why it can be so hard to overcome, a strategic approach to conquering it, and some self-empowering best practices to help navigate your way.
