Winston & Strawn Associate M. Imad Khan spoke at the Inaugural Conference on International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution hosted by Pakistan’s Centre for International Investment and Commercial Arbitration (CIICA) and CIICA’s Young Arbitration Group. The conference, held in Islamabad, explored the theme of International Arbitration in Pakistan. Imad spoke on “The Effect and Relevance of Corruption in International Arbitration” panel, discussing the differences between the role of corruption and bribery in international commercial arbitration vs. investment arbitration; the legal implications of corruption/bribery in regards to issues relating to jurisdiction, admissibility, and merits of a claim; and the difference in legal consequences where a foreign investment is procured by corruption vs. corruption during the performance of the foreign investment. In addition, Imad discussed recent trends with respect to corruption in investment arbitration, including the responsibility of States that are involved in corruption or bribery.

Imad also participated in CIICA’s training workshop and lectured on investment law.

The conference was attended by over 150 attendees, comprising of members of Pakistan’s government, academia, judiciary, the business community, and in-house and private practice lawyers. Many international arbitration practitioners were also present.
