While the growing presence of artificial intelligence may change how in-house lawyers work, professionals in the industry say that it is important for general counsel to understand the capabilities and limitations of AI while also keeping a big-picture perspective.

“What you get out relates to what you put in. If you’re putting in information that’s confidential, you have to understand where that information is going and how it’s being used,” Dane said. “Not only do general counsels have to understand the capabilities, they also have to understand the potential pitfalls in the technology.”
