Winston & Strawn sponsored the Eastland Disaster Criminal Retrial 2015: “The Chicago Trial that Never Was.” The event, made possible by the Eastland Disaster Historical Society and in partnership with the John Marshall Law School, was held on June 18 in Chicago.

In 1915, the S. S. Eastland capsized in the Chicago River and 844 people were killed. Known as the Eastland Disaster, no one was held accountable. One hundred years later, the criminal case was “reopened” with new attorneys, a new judge, and new charges being brought against new defendants. Winston & Strawn chairman Dan Webb represented the defense in the mock trial using today’s laws to try the case. He was joined by Bob Clifford of Clifford Law Offices, who served as the prosecuting attorney, and Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke.

All proceeds from this fundraiser benefited the Eastland Disaster Historical Society.
