Dan Webb Named to The Business Insider List of the Country’s Top Litigators
January 22, 2010
Winston & Strawn chairman Dan Webb, was quoted in The Business Insider Law Review in an article titled "War Story: It's Easier To Cross-Examine A Priest Than A Legendary Football Coach," published January 22, 2010.
The article states that Webb has been named to The Business Insider List of the Country's Top Litigators and relays part of Webb's litany of successes including the prosecution of John Poindexter, hundreds of courtroom wins and his undeniable celebrity in the legal field. In response to the question of what was one of his most memorable moments in the courtroom, Webb remembered the day when a split second decision meant he could not cross-examine "the greatest coach" in college football history.
Webb explains in the article that "one of the marks of a great litigator is to know within a half-second what you want to do and do it flawlessly." In the 1989 trial of a sports agent on charges of mail fraud and racketeering, one of the witnesses was Bo Schembechler, the long-time, well beloved and legendary coach at University of Michigan. Without noticing any reaction from the jury after having cross-examined the President of Notre Dame, a Catholic priest, which Webb didn't "mind or hesitate [to do]," the football coach was next. The jury "almost bowed" in reverence to the coach," said Webb. "I took one look at Bo Schembechler, [and thought] I can cross a Roman Catholic priest, but not the greatest coach in college football history."
No questions, he told the judge.
