Koschman

March 31, 2014

Winston & Strawn chairman Dan Webb was quoted in the American Lawyer article, “A Guilty Plea in a Cold Chicago Case,” published March 31, 2014.

Mr. Webb recently concluded his role as Special Prosecutor in the matter of the death of David Koschman, as former Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley’s nephew, Richard Vanecko, plead guilty to involuntarily manslaughter, nearly ten years after Koschman’s death.

When Koschman’s mother petitioned the Cook County Circuit Court in 2011 for a special prosecutor, Judge Michael Toomin asked Mr. Webb to determine whether to bring charges, and to investigate whether a cover-up by police or prosecutors had occurred.

"The only way I would agree to do this," Mr. Webb said, "was if I was given carte blanche to do everything I could to get to the bottom of it. Whatever happened, I wanted to make sure that the public understood that my office did a thorough job. The public's confidence in the criminal justice system is critical."
