Winston Chairman Tom Fitzgerald joined new Los Angeles partners David Scheper, Angela Machala, William Forman, and Bruce Fraser to discuss with The Daily Journal, California’s largest legal newspaper, how the addition of 18 attorneys in Los Angeles will equip Winston to successfully navigate post-pandemic challenges and shifting priorities.

Among the challenges the attorneys expect to face is a backlog of bench or jury trials, as Fitzgerald noted that before the pandemic, the firm tried 25-30 trials per year, but in the past six months have only tried two.

Former partner, who focuses his practice on commercial litigation, said that he expects to see an increase in financial market disruption litigation following turmoil in the stock and bond markets and in acquisitions. Meanwhile, Machala expects new securities and loan fraud cases and disputes involving the Paycheck Protection Program.

The interview also touched on the priorities of the new Biden administration, as Scheper believes it will favor small shareholders more than large corporations.

Finally, on the real estate front, former partner told The Daily Journal that the firm will be busy assisting clients with tenants who aren’t paying their leases when mortgage forbearance and foreclosure moratoriums expire.
