Coberly Serves as Moot Court Advocate During DRI’s Appellate Advocacy Seminar
March 10, 2011
Linda Coberly, vice chair of Winston & Strawn's appellate and critical motions practice group, spoke at DRI's Appellate Advocacy Seminar held in Orlando, Florida on March 10-11, 2011.
Ms. Coberly served as a moot court advocate on the March 10 panel titled "Appellate Advocacy from the Judges' Point of View." During this session, a panel of three appellate judges presided over a moot court with Ms. Coberly, and another experienced appellate practitioner, providing the arguments. Both the participating advocates and the judges provided comment and insights about their expectations prior to the argument. After the argument, the judges conferred, ruled and then offered their insights about effective oral advocacy and brief writing in general. At the conclusion, the judges were joined by the advocates for a final commentary.
James C. Martin of Reed Smith LLP served as the moderator for this panel. The moot court judges included the Honorable Kermit E. Bye, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; the Honorable Elizabeth Lacy, Supreme Court of Virginia; and the Honorable Gerald Bard Tjoflat, United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Jerrold J. Ganzfried of Howrey LLP joined Ms. Coberly as a moot court advocate.
