Charlie Papavizas Discusses Trade Between U.S. and Cuba
March 16, 2016
Charlie Papavizas, based in Winston & Strawn’s Washington, D.C. office, was quoted in The Journal of Commerce’s article “Container Lines Can Add Cuba Port Call to U.S. Services,” published on March 16, 2016. The article discusses the facilitation of cargo transport, particularly for the container trade, between Cuba and the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security is allowing authorized cargo to be transported from the U.S. to Cuba and then to other countries without requiring a separate license.
Mr. Papavizas, chair of the firm’s Maritime & Admiralty Practice, notes that the move represents a “further liberalization” of cargo transport in the region.
“It seems to facilitate voyages moving between the U.S. and Cuba and to help U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies that want to engage in trade there,” Mr. Papavizas explains.
