Charlie Papavizas Discusses Jones Act Waivers with Argus Media

Winston & Strawn Maritime Chair Charlie Papavizas spoke with Argus Media to discuss the Jones Act waiver and its changes following Congress’ re-defining of the terms of the waiver in 2021. The article discusses the outcomes of previously approved Jones Act waivers, as well as what waiving the Jones Act could look like for foreign vessels today.

“All this talk about Jones Act waivers in the current environment seems uninformed after [Congress in 2021 re-defined waiver terms as part of a defense authorization spending package],” Charlie said. “It was extremely hard to get one before and now it does not seem worthwhile because of the time limit. It has to really be an emergency.”
