The firm’s Winston for Good team in Los Angeles participated in the 2018 California Coastal Cleanup Day held on September 15. This annual statewide event, led by Heal the Bay in association with the California Coastal Commission and Ocean Conservancy, involves tens of thousands of volunteers at over 1,000 sites.
Our 16 volunteers, including firm members, family, and friends, joined other local businesses and organizations at the Aroyo Seco Confluence cleanup site to remove trash and recyclables along the LA River and keep it from entering the ocean. They used collection buckets that were decorated by Winston colleagues with thank you messages, interesting environmental facts, and inspirational quotes during an informational session in late August.
“It was a great event and everyone who participated shared with me that they really enjoyed it,” said Facilities Supervisor Aracely Manzo, who led the Winston team on this effort. As the largest group at the Aroyo Seco site, we were recognized during the orientation session and received a goody bag with movie tickets, sunblock, lip balm, metro ride cards, Heal the Bay t-shirts, and re-usable straws. “It was hot, and everyone put in serious work, but it was fun.”
With 75 percent of the cleanup sites reporting, the 2018 Coastal Cleanup tally stands at 53,073 volunteers removing 734,606 pounds of trash and recyclables.
Care for our planet is a key component of Winston’s Corporate Social Responsibility program. Our Earth Day 2018 support of the global End Plastic Pollution campaign has resulted in permanent removal of plastic straws, installation of additional water bottle filling stations, coffee pod recycling, and other waste-reducing initiatives in many of our offices.
