FTC and NHTSA Invite the Public to Participate in Connected Car Workshop

On June 28, the FTC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will co-host a workshop on privacy and security issues posed by automated and connected cars. This workshop reflects the interest regulators have had in recent years with Internet of Things, and the amount of personal information stored in cars’ systems. The two agencies have indicated topics for the conference will include: what data do vehicles with wireless interfaces collect, store, and transmit; how is that data shared or used; what are the car makers’ privacy and security policies; what types of choices do consumers have; what sorts of consumer harms can arise from the collection and use of this data; and what should be the role of government agencies with regard to wireless connected cars; among others.
