It has become an annual tradition for Winston to partner with a global charity to make an impact on a sustainable mission. This year, WISE – Winston Initiative for Sustainable Environment – selected the Solar Electric Light Fund* for our annual Earth Day celebration and global fundraiser.
The Solar Electric Light Fund, or SELF, empowers people in developing countries to rise from poverty by using energy from the sun to power rural schools, health clinics, small businesses, and water pumping and purification systems. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change showcased SELF’s Solar Market Gardens project at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 as a model for food security and sustainability.
Through SELF, Winston attorneys and staff across the firm donated more than $12,000 to fully fund a new 1.6 kW solar electric system to bring clean, reliable energy back to the school and health care facility run by the Sisters of St. Anne in the village of Chardonnières in southwest Haiti. Their seaside compound was battered by Hurricane Matthew last October, wiping out the solar electrical system on which the community relied.
* The Solar Electric Light Fund, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
