On August 10, Senior Paralegal Ken Berry and Records Clerk Vincent Smith treated a group of 12 young men from Horizons for Youth (HFY) to an enlightening day at the DuSable Museum of African American History. This outing was part of a male mentoring program that Winston initiated earlier this year.
The overall themes of the day were to get to know your history so you do not repeat the mistakes of the past and to take advantage of the opportunities we enjoy today thanks to the struggles and sacrifices of our ancestors. During their discussion after the museum tour, the young men said they were particularly struck by the Harold Washington exhibit along with the exhibit showing how slaves were transported. One of the parent chaperones expressed his gratefulness for his son's exposure to another part of life through this experience. The day was capped off with a pizza lunch.
HFY is Chicago's only organization providing need-based scholarships, comprehensive support programs and educational resources for students of all academic ability levels from kindergarten through college completion.
Our first HFY male mentoring session, held at the firm in February, focused on getting your education, making good decisions, and helping others in need. A second session in April included a group discussion, games, and a pizza lunch. This program has been well-received by the mentees, parent chaperones, and HFY volunteer coordinators alike.
Other firm members involved in this impactful Winston for Good effort were Leonard Glower, Tim Kincaid, and Donny Williams. Records clerk Vincent Smith has also employed the assistance of his son, Vincent Smith Jr., who is a recent graduate of the Chicago Police Academy and brings a valuable perspective to the table.
