In honor of International Women’s Day, Winston welcomed author and film critic, Elizabeth Weitzman for a discussion on the role of pop culture and entertainment in shaping society’s views about women.

In her presentation, Hollywood on Trial: Cultural Images of Women in Law, Weitzman showed film clips that depicted how the portrayal of women and female lawyers in movies has evolved over time, in keeping with society’s shifting views of working women.

Weitzman also described how entertainment can subvert the status quo and bring about important change by citing the popular TV series by Shonda Rhimes, How to Get Away with Murder.

“We have the power to decide which depictions of women in popular culture we embrace and which we reject,” said Weitzman and she urged everyone to watch more shows created by diverse individuals.

This special presentation was sponsored by the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and our Women’s Leadership Initiative. Learn more about Winston & Strawn’s diversity initiatives here.
