Winston staff and attorneys participated in a number of community service projects during the Chicago office’s annual Week of Action, held August 14-18.

With the school year right around the corner, 10 volunteers assembled school supply kits for UCAN, which serves 10,000 at-risk children, youth, and families across Illinois through more than 30 programs that provide a continuum of care for those who have experienced trauma. This effort was held in conjunction with a school supply drive, through which Winston attorneys and staff donated more than 140 school supply kits to Back 2 School Illinois. On Wednesday, a dozen Winston staff employees visited Misericordia, a community that provides a continuum of care to maximize the potential of persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities. Our volunteers at this event learned about the programming and job opportunities available to the more than 600 Misericordia residents, working alongside some of them in the arts room, bakery, coffee shop, and garden.

The Week of Action concluded with the popular Field Museum event, where 23 Winston volunteers were introduced to the museum’s vast botany collections and received instruction on how to label, repackage, and organize samples dating back to the 1800s that are used in the museum’s laboratories and library. This unique opportunity also provided volunteers with the opportunity to help digitalize more than 500 labels for the museum’s database. Click here for more photos from this event.
