Robert Michels is a litigation partner in Winston & Strawn’s Chicago office who concentrates his practice in complex commercial litigation, white-collar criminal matters, and corporate internal investigations.
Mr. Michels has handled cases involving a wide variety of issues, including civil and criminal RICO, antitrust, securities fraud, health care fraud and abuse, deceptive trade or business practices, unfair competition, UCC issues, construction claims, fraud, breach of contract, and various class actions.
Mr. Michels has substantial trial and courtroom experience. He has conducted approximately 20 jury trials, most of which have been in federal district court, and has handled and argued numerous appellate matters, including approximately ten arguments before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Michels also has conducted dozens of evidentiary hearings on various matters, and has briefed and argued motions in numerous cases.
In addition, he has substantial experience conducting and overseeing investigations of alleged wrongdoing. Mr. Michels has handled various corporate internal investigations as well as investigations leading up to the filing of civil actions. Prior to joining Winston & Strawn, Mr. Michels was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois from 1990-1995. During that time, he oversaw and conducted numerous federal grand jury investigations and handled the prosecution and appeal of a variety of federal criminal matters, including those involving mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, tax-related offenses, money laundering, bribery, and public corruption, as well as cases involving organized crime and other offenses.
Following law school, Mr. Michels completed a two-year clerkship for the Hon. Nicholas J. Bua of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Activities
Mr. Michels is a member of the firm's Hiring Committee and head of the Chicago Litigation Paralegal Oversight Committee. Mr. Michels is also a board member for the Midwest Center for the Law and the Deaf, and previously was a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School (2001-2002).
Education
Mr. Michels received a B.B.A. in Finance from the University of Notre Dame in 1985 and a J.D., with honors, from DePaul University College of Law in 1988, where he was a member of the DePaul Law Review.
